The Best in Their Field

I have a small project I am involved in that is not connected to me trying to get an individual's Financial Advisor Business.

I am going out and meeting owners and Presidents of companies and asking them what would one of my clients say that would spark me to say, "Let me call Jim at XYZ company, he has exactly what you need." I might say "Susan at ABC will be able to help you but before you contact her you should gather the following information.

So if you know a successful company President or business owner and you think they would be willing to sit down with me for a few minutes, let me know who they are and I will try to connect with them. I believe you will be helping them out because it is more than free advertising for them. It is the possibility of bringing an informed potential client in contact with their business.

Once again, I don't plan on going over any of what I do with the company owners and presidents beyond I work with individuals and they typically share issues that are not related to Financial Advising. This has caused me to come up with this project.

"Sell Michigan"

Buying Michigan is very important at this time. Two great websites, MichiganMall.com and BuyMichigan.com provide information about businesses, products, and services based in Michigan that sell in Michigan. Our support helps the economy grow as Michigan's GDP grows.

We also need to think "Sell Michigan". The world has many wants and needs that could easily be provided by Michiganders. Here is a small sampling of the Michigan MBC Global is working to sell:

Boats. We have identified a need by a foreign government to buy more than 30 boats, including speed boats and surveillance boats. It is a seed order for future business and MBC Global, a Michigan based company will assist in filling the order. We would love the boats to be made in Michigan, but if not possible, let us coordinate the sale using a Michigan distributor. Our only problem is we need a referral of a business that is willing to sell boats for foreign delivery (Fair trade agreement is in place). Do you have a recommendation?

Teachers. We have been contacted by a college in Africa that is creating an American zone where their students will learn the American culture. We are not talking about removing talented Michigan teachers on a permanent basis as these are commitments for a semester or year. These teachers will be representatives for the state from which they come, building relationships that will result in commerce for their state. Wouldn't it be great to have these educators become ambassadors for Michigan? When they return they will be better teachers because they will have global experience to share with our students at a time when the world's economy is becoming global!

Baseball equipement. I posted this before only to get comments about why, if used baseball equipment is available, it shouldn't be used here in inner Detroit. Although we do not despite a local need, the way business is done in some other cultures is that a relationship must happen first. If we can get the baseball equipment that has been requested and deliver it to the inner city in the foreign country where it has been requested, we will establish ourselves as a caring society that is more interested in people than their dollars. If Michigan is the state to establish this credibility, the person doing the requesting has the power and finances for major orders of basketball and baseball equipment. Is there a business in Michigan that would like to fill those orders? All they are asking for to show our good nature is used equipment.

This has been a lengthy message and hopefully one or two will get this far along in it. If so I hope you see how the global economy will greatly enrich our state finncially and experientially if we all work to "Sell Michigan"!

Contact me with any referrals that may assist in these endeavors. I will make sure that as a Michigan company we present the Michigan offers first. Florida and Virginia have already stepped up on items 1 and 2, so let me know as quickly as possible.

Thanks, Rick

MBC Global (www.mbcglobal.org)

Ask 4- The universally speaking edition

Three posts later we are finally going to get into why ASKS work. You have likely read, "ask and ye shall receive". There is a lot of truth to that Asking is always the predecessor to receiving. Ever wonder why?

There are many laws that govern the universe. The ones that pertain most to business networking are:
The law of attraction
The law of reciprocity
The law of generosity

If you're familiar with "The secret", you have learned a lot about the law of attraction. The concept in most simple terms is thoughts become things (if you haven't already, sign up for mike dooley's daily note from the universe at www.tut.com). "The secret" teaches us that there are three steps to attracting:

Ask- determine what you want and hold it in your consciousness. Feel the feeling of already possessing what you seek.

Gratitude- being grateful for what you have is far more powerful than complaining about what you lack. Maintiaining an attitude of gratitude allows you to have the right mindset to attract what you seek.

Receive-you need to be prepared mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually before you can receive what you seek. I had a great conversation with Ben Rosenzweig on this topic this past Tuesday. Maybe he will chime in...

The law of reciprocity- this is one big reason that people go to networking groups and give leads. The law of reciprocity basically says that as i do good by you, you will go out of your way to do good by me. Simply stated, if i give you a lead, you are likely going to go out of your way to give me one back.

The law of generosity- the law of generosity is a lot like the law of reciprocity. The difference is that instead of an individual looking to return the favor, the universe looks to return it. This is where the real results come from giving.

If you read my opening statements in the first post, you know that i encourage asking. Every ask results in an opportunity to give. Surely you don't have the ability to satisfy every need, but when you can, you should. Why? Because you will be enacting some very powerful laws on your behalf. Oh yeah and its really good to help others too

Heres to asking, giving and laws we can all live by.

Things you should know about MCC

I am ecstatic about the growth of our group. We now have over 760 people all of whom could have an impact on your businesses. I want to make sure we are all receiving significant value from this group. As such, I would like to encourage you to take full utilization of both our online and offline networking opportunities. Here are some ideas on how to do so:

Online- the most important thing you can do for yourself is fill out your profile. The most important thing you can do for others is read theirs. Please take the time to upload a picture as it helps to personalize your page. I would also recommend that you fill out the "personal objective" section. Loosely translated, that is a great place for you to put your ASK. I would also like to thank Rachel Williams, Nancy Brundred and Ben Rosenzweig. We are in the process of putting together an actual MCC best practices document.

While on the topic of ASK, I would like to draw your attention to our discussion groups. One of them is dedicated solely to your ASK. If you are looking for something or someone, that is the place to post it. There are lots of other great discussion groups including:

Best practices networking
Mcc experts
In and around Detroit
The spiritual side of life
And many more.

These discussion groups are a great place for you to show your flare while simultaneously learning about and adding value to others.

One last online must: the calendar. If you have an event, post it. Looking for something to do on a Tuesday, check the calendar. Its amazing how much goes on every day.

While the online component of mcc is important, our face to face events are where mcc members really shine. If you have yet to join us for an outing, consider yourself invited. This summer promises picnics, golf outings and other events that showcase our states natural beauty.

On the off chance you missed it, you have lunch plans on Tuesdays. We will continue to expand to bring lunch to a location near you. We have also opened mcc happy hours and breakfasts are soon to be served. All this info and more can be found on our online calendar.

Two specific notes of personal interest:

1. On may 31 we will be hosting a large networking event disguied as a day of work with www.blightbusters.org. We will need people to paint, do demolition and help with general clean up. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other better while helping the community.

2. I have scheduled two networking training events that will include ample networking time. May 12 from 2:30-5:00 and may 16, from 8:30-11:00. Both sessions will be held at automation alley. More info can be found guess where, yes the calendar.

Thank you for your support. Please do let others know about us and as always tell us what we can do to help you.

BE Great-

Ask 3- The who do you ask edition

So far we have looked at the components of a good ask and for what to ask. If you've got those things down, it's now time to figure out who to ask. This is where it gets kind of fun. The reality is, there are very few people you shouldn't be asking, or at least telling. Here's why:

It has been said that each person is the center of influence for about 250 people. While I agree that number may sound high to some of you, think about ALL of the people you know and have interacted with in your life:

Classmates
Teachers
Family
In-laws
Teammates
PTA members
Church sharers
Work colleagues
Neighbors
Bankers, store clerks, wait staff and the list goes on...

Obviously you are not going to have outstanding relationships with everyone of these people, but I bet you have good relationships with people in each of these groups. This is relevant because it shows you who out of your "network" you can ask. Hopefully you noticed that these people really aren't outside of your network at all.

Whats really cool about it is since we are all networking together, these people are now a part of all of our networks.

There are two reasons that asking multiple people is of benefit. The first one will be covered greatly in the next piece. The second one is You don't know who someone else knows. The person could be connected to exactly the person you need to meet. You need to ask to find out whether or not the people you know can connect you to the people you want to know through the people they know. Yeah, go ahead and read that again.

Its important to help the people whose help you are seeking. My favorite networking question of all time comes from bob burg. It is How would I recognize if someone i am speaking to is a good referral for you? Ask that. Ask that often. Its a great conversation starter. When someone is asked that, they generally want to return the favor.

The other types of folks you want to ask are those who you believe would be connected to whom you seek. If you are looking to meet a specific decision maker, find out who else sells to them. If they have an assistant, get to know them. Use tools like Linkedin to find out about their hobbies or other things that may be of interest to them. It's funny how relationship building and stalking can be so closely related. Evidently, I need to work on my definition of funny.

We live in a world that has six degrees of connectedness. You should be able to contact anyone in this country within four calls. Don't get me wrong, you certainly need to make the first call count, but it can be done.

If you ever want to know who to call first, feel free to reach out to me (we won't even count that call).

Sorry this post didn't make it on Thursday. Long day.

Terry

Most Embarrassing Mom Moments!

Mother's Day is approaching and what better time than now to share your "most embarrassing" moments as a mom. I love hearing funny stories involving children. What they don't come up with!

I will get this started (and this isn't one of my proudest moments, but will share with you).

One day, I was toting around my 3 and 1 year old boys (now 4 & 6) running errands. We were FINALLY finished and on our way home to have lunch. Of course, we get behind the slowest person going about 12mph in a 35. My 3 year old son was whining about hoooooooow hungry he was, and the baby was screaming. So all I wanted to do was get home, and get there FAST!

We reach our street, (still have a good stretch to go), and I approach another slow moving car in front of me. This person was obviously hunting for a house because she kept stopping & going, and was not towards the side of the street, and there was no way for me to get around her. So ALL THE WAY down the street we're braking & going. All the while the kids in the background..., so finally I say "Come on, you idiot." Finally the car stops 2 houses down from mine to let me go, and I get in my driveway, and begin unbuckling the kids. The lady was a mail carrier with an Express package to be delivered to me! **Sigh*** And my 3 yr old gets out of the van and says ... "Hey lady, my mamma called you an idiot!"

I was sooooooooo embarrassed. Oh my gosh! I apologized, of course, and have learned to watch everything that is said in front of my kids. And, I try to keep my patience in check when we're closing in on little meltdowns. How else are we supposed to raise compassion, patience, and understanding if we don't "behave" appropriately. So we definitely try to lead by example in our home!

Hope you found this somewhat enjoyable and can't wait to hear your stories! Have a wonderful Mother's Day!

The Six-Word Challenge

The Six-Word Challenge

True communication is based in clarity. Great writing - or speaking - is lean and muscular, and editing is an important art. Great writers weigh every word, every phrase, every paragraph and point for its value, impact, and propel-ability.

In the 1920s, Ernest Hemingway - the master of "word economy" - was challenged to write a complete story in just six words. He won the challenge, earning $10 for his success.

His story: "For Sale: Baby Shoes. Never Worn."

So I make the same challenge to MCC members across the world: send me your six-word story. I'll ask a few other MCC heroes to judge with me, and the person with the most profound, impactful, or outrageously funny entry wins ten bucks, a "Hemingway Hero" call-out in my June newsletter, and special recognition right here on Collective X.

Linda Angér

www.TheWriteConcept.com

Adjunct Faculty Opportunity

Over the last several weeks, I have been working on building a relationship with Coscend Communication Solutions that would lead to an employment agreement. Coscend is a very progressive startup IT Service company focused on the Communications industry (http://coscendcommunications.com/) and my role with them would be in the area of Business Development/Sales. This is really good news and leads to my Ask.

I have an MBA, am good with people, and have delivered seminars/classes. I am interested in meeting faculty recruiters at Oakland University, Walsh College, Baker College (or the larger universities that run executive MBA programs in SE MI). The reason I would like to speak with them is to discuss the opportunity of teaching a class or two at their school. The benefits to the school are: 1) Field experience, 2) Academic credentials (engineering degree and MBA), 3) demonstrated ability to deliver training/development programs. Benefits to me are; 1) Support desire to make a difference in an individual's life, 2) A few extra dollars (startups generally have a long term focused compensation plan).

By the way, regardless of the outcome of my negotiation with Coscend, I would love the opportunity to be involved in some type of college level instruction.

Regards,

Ask 2: The what you should ask for edition

Obviously I can't tell you that. But I should be able to point you in the right direction.

It's really important to give people the opportunity to help you. This is what networking is about, assuming that you are helping them too, of course. From a spiritual perspective step 1 is always ASK. You won't be properly provided for if you don't first ask for what you seek.

If you don't feel that you have everything you want right now, there are only a handful of reasons that could be.

1. You're not in alignment with or clear on what you seek.
2. You don't believe you are entitled to what you want
3. You don't follow the signs that are presented to you that point you in the direction you need to go.
4. Your asks are not being properly received.

This particular piece is going to look mostly at issue one. The other three will get their due attention, don't worry

Let me explain what I mean by "not being in alignment with what you seek". So often, I talk to people that tell me they want to make more money. I am not knocking that as a goal by any stretch of the imagination. Anyway, saying you want more money and doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to get it suggests your intentions and your actions are out of alignment. If your intentions are and clear and your actions support them, you are in alignment. Other reasons people may not be in alignment is because they are seeking things that aren't good for their Being.

Let's look at getting clear on what you seek. Aside from more money, do you know what it is that you want? This isn't always an easy process. It requires a lot of thought and the ability to get very quiet with ourselves. So many of us think that the answers to the questions we have are outside of us. Not the case. Everything you seek to know is and has been inside of you. So my suggestion to you is ask yourself some questions and then get really, really quiet so that you may hear the answers. The questions to help you grow your business could look like this:

What does my ideal client look like?
Who refers me the most business?
What types of companies make good strategic partners for me?
If I could work with only three companies, who would they be?

Those questions are all good, but what if you already know you are not in the right role for you? You need to start with a different set of questions:

If I could be anything in this life, what would I be?
Where do my talents intersect with the needs of the world?
What do I really enjoy doing that can earn me a good living?
What are my strengths?

In simplest terms, ask yourself what would make you wildly happy (either in business growth or career direction) and chart a course toward it. If you figure out what it is that is going to bring you bliss, you have just uncovered for what you should ask.

Talk less ....Communicate more

Seth Godin wrote a recent post about unnecessary words such as "just" and "sort of" and "probably" and "basically". I think people tend to use these words mostly out of insecurity, or by trying to avoid conflict from appearing too harsh, or by trying to appear overtly educated by using extra words, or simply because they sound better.

The ubiquitous "Just do it" slogan rings true with a certain poetic quality. However, to truly reap the essence of Nike's message, while simultaneously cutting 66% of waste, one can transform the slogan to simply this:

"Do."

I think you get the point: Yoda was right all along. (Right Yoda was.)

The components of a rock solid ASK

At MCC, we use the term "ASK" as opposed to 30 second commercial or elevator pitch. Why? Those concepts are antiquated and we have yet to hold an event with either a stopwatch or in an elevator. Besides, if the ask is done correctly, the person to whom we are speaking will know exactly what type of work we do. It's your job to BRIEFLY cover that in the ask. By the time you read this, you should have a very good idea how to create a new and significantly improved ask for yourself.

A good ask should connect you with exactly what you seek. I am not saying it will do so every time, but your odds of making the right connection will certainly increase if you follow these guidelines.

Your Name, your role and for whom you do it. It should be one quick, short sentence.

My name is Terry Bean and I am the CNO of Networked inc.

Next should be a sentence about why people do business with your company.

We are experts at infusing a networking mindset into small and medium companies so they can grow their business.

The above sentence tells you: Who, What and Why. These are certainly important elements. I have also spent about 7 seconds talking thus far.

The next sentence should address how the person you are speaking to can help you. Before I get into this, I want to give you a list of things it should be:

Concise: Not that you are in a hurry, but there is no sense in giving people more information than they need. We have all been in a situation when we wished the person that was telling us every piece of minutia about their business would just go away, right? Don't be that person. Say what you have to say, but do it quickly. Our good friend, Charlie Wollborg says it this way: Titillate, don't Satiate. See how brief that is?

Clear: Does it still make sense after shortening your message? If it doesn't, you may need to workshop it a little. People need to understand what it is you would like them to do for you.

Compelling: Is your request something that people think, "Hmm, that's interesting. I would like to help this person". If it's not, what are you going to do to make it so? Sure it's great that you are networking and meeting new people, but if you can't get any of them to help you by introducing you to the people you need to meet, you would be better served spending that time cold calling. Suggestion: Relate your ask to them. That could be by offering an incentive for those who help you, or by showing how what you do for your clients may benefit them.

Specific: While this seems counter-intuitive, like it will lessen the possible number of responses you will get...know this: It will lessen the number of responses you will get. How many of us have gotten referrals that were close to what we seek? Worse yet, how many have gotten referrals that weren't even close? Sure we appreciate the effort, but who has time to track down a bunch of folks that really aren't our prospect. If you do, call me. MCC needs some help on a handful of committees. Make your ask as absolutely granular as you can. Don't say I am looking for someone in purchasing at GM. If you know you need to speak to Johnny Knoxville who purchases castings and works in the Warren facility. Ask for Johnny. You never know...(I'll finish that later).

It's OK to ask for help (is there an echo in here?). Tell people you are asking for their help and that you would appreciate it.

Here is an example of my ASK utilizing what we have stated here:

My name is Terry Bean and I am the CNO of Networked inc. We are experts at infusing a networking mindset into small and medium companies so they can grow their business. I would appreciate your help in connecting me with an executive at Hanson's Windows. I will help them get more business from their current base, identify future clients and strategic partners and most importantly communicate this message throughout the organization.

Okay, enough about me...let's talk about my hair. Hahaha. I want to give you an example from our "Ask" discussion board. Here is what Keith Gillette wrote (I don't know Keith. I am not endorsing his company or product,I am just giving another real world example). I would like to thank Keith in advance for his ask and hope he doesn't mind that I have used it as an example.

Here is Keith's ask as posted:
Hello everyone.

I'm now the owner of www.suddenvalues.com of SW.Oakland County. I am looking to meet business owners in the following communities: Birmingham,Berkley,Clawson,Royal Oak,Madison Heights,Huntington Woods and Troy. I am offering a Local Marketing Service which helps business owners get their regular customers back in their store at least 2 more extra times a year and also bring them new customers. I am looking at a launch date of May 19,2008. The first 12 merchants that sign up will get a great deal. Any help will be greatly rewarded. I have an awesome referal program.

It's compelling, specific, kind of clear but not overly concise (but part of that is a list of cities). I might say:

My name is Keith Gillette and I am the proud new regional owner of www.suddenvalues.com. We help retailers increase visits from their current clients while bringing new clients through their door. I would appreciate your assistance in meeting people that own stores in the following communities: Birmingham,Berkley,Clawson,Royal Oak,Madison Heights,Huntington Woods and Troy. Not only do I offer an awesome referral program for you, the first 12 merchants that sign up will get a great deal.

Good luck with the new business Keith. I am sure some of our members know folks that may benefit from your services. Let us know how it works out for you.

Hopefully you are all aware that we have a whole discussion topic designed for you to share your ask. Please do so. Please tell us specifically how we can help you. Remember, every opportunity we have to help you, helps us. It all starts with a good ask.

All About the ASK, the intro

If I could give you just one piece of advice when it comes to both networking and universal laws of spirituality, it would be simple; ASK.

So many of us find it challenging. Like it's a sign of weakness. Or maybe you were taught that you need to make it on your own. That others aren't going to be concerned with your issues. That's old world thinking. New world thinking tells us that having the opportunity to help others actually helps us.

We can debate when "networking" commences all day long, but folks in the know recognize the concept of "givers get". Conventional thinking was that those who give a lot of opportunities will receive a lot in return. There is truth to that. What we now need to consider is that the opportunity to help someone else is also a "give". By telling others what you seek, you give them the opportunity to help you. If they do, they have both you and the universe looking to return the favor. Now that's a powerful combination. Sounds like they would be getting more than twice as much help.

This week I will share with you five different posts on the importance of a good ask. The five topics will be:

1. The components of a good ask
2. For what should you ask?
3. Who you should ask
4. How the ask relates to the universe
5. Asking is so powerful that MCC was created solely to accommodate it.

It is my intention that by reading these five posts you will understand the power that we all have to be the change we want to see in our lives, our businesses and our community as a whole.

Here's to a great week.

TOSA (To Our Shared Abundance)-

Be Great-

Terry Bean
CNO
248.224.1326
www.networkedinc.com (it's almost done, but it still looks cool)

You Speak, We Listen...Great additions to MCC

At yesterday's MCC Live event in Royal Oak the question "What can MCC do for you" was asked.

Based on the feedback here are a few of the improvements that will be made to MCC:

I just added two new discussion groups:

1. MotorCityConnect Success Stories- We want to celebrate with you. Let us know the good stuff that happens as a result of your being here. I am also looking for real life examples of MCC working for a presentation that Mr.s Biskner, Patino and I are doing this coming Tuesday in Lansing. Your story may make you famous (at least for 15 seconds).

2. MotorCityConnect Experts: One of the results of yesterdays conversation was that we have a TON of experts here on MCC and wouldn't it be cool if they shared their specific knowledge for the good of us all. So if you are a mortgage guy, tell us about how to make the best use of our single largest asset. If you're in telecom, tell us what to look for when changing service. If you have home improvement tips, do share. Whatever you do, don't make it a commercial. Trust me, if you share your knowledge professionally and objectively, people will seek you out! If you don't, I will seek you out

We will be having at least two social gatherings per month. We will be moving them around to different areas, so come join us for networking and your choice of beverage at a location near you.

Starting in May, MCC will be having breakfast meetings. That's right...start your day off right at an MCC live event. More details to come.

We will be expanding the Business Attraction Series and adding more great speakers to that line up. It will include both MCC members and expert speakers from outside the area. They will deliver information that can impact your business NOW!

We will be also adding the "Soup to Nuts" series as well. Here you will have the opportunity to learn more about the experts in MCC. The format will be engaging, informative and very topical.

Terry will be offering classes on networking. Here you will learn best practices for both online and offline networking. You will have the ability to immediately implement what you learn while at the meeting.

Lots more opportunity to come together as a community to help others, learn and play. This Saturday is the Christmas in Action event and we will be doing the blightbusters day on May 31. There are a ton of other great events going on, check the Calendar today! I would love to see our members start hosting open houses. This may tie nicely into the "Soup to Nuts" series. Finally, with winter gone, look for picnics, playdates and the second annual MCC golf outing.

If you want to assist with ANY of these, contact me (we could use the help!). If you have suggestions on how to make MCC a better place for you and the rest of us, please drop me a note or give me a call.

As always, thank you for being a member of MCC. All my best.

BE great-

I am new to the "networking" thing. I am considering a memberhip to help me along, but I am not sure which one would best suit me. I am considering a chamber, Automation Alley, or LBN.

We are a real estate appraisal firm and work for attorneys, legal professionals, insurance companies, mortgage brokers, lenders, and appraisal management companies.

Your thoughts & suggestions are welcome!
